Velociraptors, birthdays and oh my the learning curve…

I took most of the day off yesterday to enjoy the Youngest Child’s birthday. She has been on this earth for exactly 17 years and that is a little bit hard to believe. My studio velociraptor helped us celebrate, after a little bit of wardrobe assistance from the ex Mr. Honey&Ollie.

yes, it is a Birthday Princess Velociraptor. Yes, we’re a strange little family. Rawr.

I am feeling a little bit overwhelmed right now. There’s so much going on and I am filling up pages in my Moleskine quite rapidly. Branding, website construction, domain hosting, technology, new jewelry making techniques, consolidating design lines, show prep… I’d be lying if I didn’t say that it was a lot like trying to outrun an avalanche. Sometimes I feel as if my brain is going to explode. Kelly Rae calls that a “steep learning curve” (I am taking her Flying Lessons e-course right now) and boy howdy, is she right. It is steep. It is also worth it. It will all ultimately simplify my life and make Honey&Ollie better. I love my little business, love what I do and I want it to be wonderful. I want to give it the very best that I’ve got. I’ve just got to get through the hard parts.

It’s a lot like organizing the garage, really. At first it is horrifying and overwhelming. You cry and think you’d rather be drinking coffee or having a nice lie down. You pull everything out and wind up with piles of disorganized mess all over the lawn. Then, slowly, gradually, you prioritize. You deal with the big stuff first, then put each individual little thing back in its right place. You discard what you don’t need, rethink structures, and eventually come up with a clean space that lets you find everything you need.

At least, that’s the hope.

I really have to recommend the Kelly Rae Flying Lessons e-course. I think registration is open for another 48 hours, we’re into the second week but there’s time to catch up. I am getting so much value from it already. If you’re looking to make some meaningful changes in how you approach being an artist and a businessperson, it will help you.

thanks for sharing about the class! I took the plunge. I know I’m swamped with actual College and kids and all, but I just can’t pass up the opportunity to help grow my little design business. Thanks again 🙂

I ran into Kelly Rae at an antique fair last Saturday. She is quite the creative gal. I am sure you will learn lots.

  3. Soak it up right now, dear Rainy, soak it up and swim in it, with few thoughts of After. After will be there when you are ready to greet it. Now is soak-up/swim-in time… and if you didn’t feel a bit (!) overwhelmed right now I would suggest that you were *blocking* the wisdom coming at you — obviously you are NOT blocking, so YAY YOU.

    Swim… swim… swim (take big breath); repeat…
    xoxo, a.
